When your canvas is a living thing, it pays to be cautious. Protect your business with tattoo insurance, and make sure your name is remembered permanently for all the right reasons.
This all-in-one cover for tattoo artists includes:
Malpractice – for physical or mental injury, illness or death of clients caused by your negligence or error.
Public liability – for physical damage and injuries caused by your business or the products you supply.
Your clients are paying for your art. But the difference here is, they can’t sell it off at auction when they’re done with it. Tatts are for life, and there are risks involved, so the pressure’s on for you to get it right.
There’s a lot more to being a tattooist than a steady hand and artistic skill. You’ll need all the right training to guarantee your clients are kept safe, and you’ll need a licence from your local council to prove you’ve done it.
Even if your masterpieces go down a storm, accidents can still happen. And there are some catastrophes you can’t avoid.
Inking without insurance is a pretty dangerous move. It’s a bit like working with a blindfold on.
Whether you’re doing it on the side, working freelance, or running your own studio, you’ll need tattoo artist insurance. Because we’re guessing you don’t have a bottomless pit of money, or legal expertise.
Your work might be ink-redible, but things can still go wrong.
If you don’t have insurance, and someone makes a claim against you, all the fine lines and dot work in the world won’t save you from the potentially costly consequences.
If you do laser tattoo removal, or body piercings, you’ll need to be covered for those things too.
There are a few different kinds of tattoo insurance you’ll need to think about.
All tattoo artists need treatment liability insurance (also known as medical malpractice). This’ll cover you for any medical issues that arise from your work. Like infections, allergic reactions, or skin damage that result in a claim.
As a tattooist, you take on a pretty big responsibility. You’re permanently changing someone’s appearance. What if they asked for a 13 but you drew a 31?
Say a client thinks you haven’t done what they asked. Or the quality isn’t what they expected. You could be faced with a claim. You’ll need professional indemnity insurance to pay for your defence.
If a client has a slip, trip, or fall in your tattoo studio, or their property is damaged, public liability insurance is there to pay legal fees and any compensation owed.
Own a studio? It’s a wise idea to get contents insurance to protect your space, and all the essential equipment you use there. If you’re freelance and moving around a lot, then portables insurance is the one for you.
Have employees? By law you’ll need employers’ liability insurance.
The cost of your tattoo insurance will depend on lots of things. Like whether you have your own studio, how many employees you have, and how much equipment you use.
One thing’s for sure though, treatment liability insurance is an absolute must for all tattooists. Whatever the cost, it’s worth protecting yourself from medical-related claims, because they can cost you more than just money. A lot of money at that.
Does sorting out insurance give you the needle? It doesn’t have to.
